[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Solomon's Perjury" Episode 7 (2017/01/15)

Episode seven of “Solomon’s Perjury” is all about perspective. The truth is always observed subjectively by each of us and one person’s truth might not be another’s. The trial gains new and important witnesses, Ji-hoon continues to succeed in his manipulation, but Seo-yeon sadly continues letting her convictions and speculation blind her. A new, mysterious figure emerges as a presence in So-woo’s life around the time of his death.

Given how much the series tries to humanize and soften Woo-hyeok (Baek Cheol-min) as we progress, it is pretty certain that he is no killer. However, seeing Dong-hyeon (Hak Jin) and Seong-min (Lee Do-gyeom) give their own side about the same incident of his perceived admittance to murder really drives this home. Both students are clearly telling the truth, but the truth is subjective and that is another challenge of trials and specifically witness testimonies.

Ji-hoon (Jang Dong-yoon) is still operating with a big picture in mind, deliberately missing opportunities to use Seo-yeon’s (Kim Hyeon-soo) slip ups to his advantage. Yet I am not sure how much he himself knows. Ji-hoon seems genuinely taken aback by some information while he clearly seems privy to other. At the moment I am convinced he saw So-woo (Seo Yeong-joo-I) fall, but he may not know more than this. I cannot tell what is good acting by the actor and what is good acting by his character, which shows great work from Jang Dong-yoon.

At the same time, I lament Seo-yeon’s trajectory. Ji-hoon is gripping and clearly the one controlling this trial, but a stronger opposition would make this more interesting. Seo-yeon went from distrustful to trusting, but both are bad places to be when seeking the truth. You have to act with the mindset of your side being right, but you also have to consider the alternative and prepare for it. Joo-ri’s (Sin Se-hwi) story could still be a lie, but Seo-yeon does not see this.

It just feels as if Seo-yeon has been sidelined as a character in this episode and abandoned as an idealistic person with little use and little foresight about anything. For someone who claimed she can read everyone but Ji-hoon, she is missing a lot of vital information about people due to taking the concept of trust in her indictment too far. While I hope the series addresses this, we have bigger fish to fry.

Kyeong-moon (Jo Jae-hyeon) has been a suspect since the start and now we know what So-woo had on him and the Jeong-guk Foundation. I still doubt our culprit is the obvious devil’s advocate played by an actor fresh off a villain role, but I do think he is a key person in the case. So much to think about, so little time. This is what keeps “Solomon’s Perjury” so engaging.

“Solomon’s Perjury” is directed by Kang Il-soo, written by Kim Ho-soo and features Kim Hyeon-soo, Jang Dong-yoon, Seo Ji-hoon, Seo Yeong-joo-I and Jo Jae-hyeon.
