With some of the biggest drama hits of the past year, KBS had a full roster of stars in attendance to pick up trophies at the KBS Drama Awards. Or, as I like to call it, the Moonlight Descended From the Sun Drawn By Clouds Show, since those two dramas pretty much raked in all the awards (a surprise to no one, as they were both massive hits for the network). This year, KBS did the really annoying thing of splitting the Daesang AND the Top Excellence Actor Awards, which always drives me bonkers. Just choose a winner! It’s not that hard!
Song Hye-gyo and Song Joong-ki split the Daesang, which I guess is not unlike Descended From the Sun winning the Daesang as a show at the Baeksangs earlier this year. Kim Haneul won a Top Excellence Award for her thoughtful melodrama On the Way to the Airport, and then the men—Park Shin-yang (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) and Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds)—had to split theirs. Basically, there were just a lot of winners.
Almost everyone got a Best Couple Award, and Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo got two of them(!), for being the uber couple. There were tear-filled speeches and lots of good cheer to go around, and probably a lot of praying from KBS execs to have another drama year just like this one in 2017. Here are your winners! Drumroll, please…

Naturally, the Song-Song Couple got the bulk of the limelight on the red carpet. I actually preferred their classic black-and-white look at the Baeksangs, which was more polished than what they chose this time around. Song Joong-ki’s casual burgundy suit is so not my kind of look, especially when paired with a turtleneck. I’m lamenting the wasted opportunity to dazzle us all in a perfect black tux. I don’t particularly love Song Hye-gyo’s dress either, though at least she looks classic and elegant in her gown. It’s not a dazzler, but she looks like Snow White, which is probably the look she was going for. Her makeup is flawless, but I mean, come on—it’s Song Hye-gyo.
Co-MCs for the night Jeon Hyun-moo, Kim Ji-won (Descended From the Sun) and Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) arrived together. It’s another sea of white dresses on the red carpet, of course, but I like this one on Kim Ji-won—it’s sexy and perfectly fitted, and I love the sleeves. I do wish she’d glammed up her hair and makeup though. Meanwhile, Park Bo-gum in a purrrty black velvet tux is a very nice Christmas present. Thank you, Santa.
It’s such a shame that Kim Yoo-jung wasn’t there, but the rest of the Moonlight cast sure had their moment in the spotlight. Chae Soo-bin, Jinyoung, and Kwak Dong-yeon were bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and beautiful. I am especially in love with Kwak Dong-yeon’s blue tux—so bright and fun!
Kim Haneul wore a big Cinderella ball gown, which has a lovely full skirt that I just want to swish around. I don’t know that the dress really works top-to-bottom though—the sleeves are actually not that flattering—and I think it’s just too wedding-dressy for my taste. I would’ve liked to see her in something sleek and sexy, and less juvenile. Her On the Way to the Airport co-star Lee Sang-yoon wore a classic tux and a chipper smile. I’m just happy that they both picked up well-deserved trophies for their drama.
I. Love. This. Dress. It may not be colorful, but it’s glitzy and fabulous, and it’s my favorite of the night. Kim So-hyun looks like a movie star in it, and she’s flawless in every shot. Her Page Turner co-star Ji-soo was also there, looking like a big dork, which is totally Ji-soo’s appeal (Don’t ever change!). They both already have dramas lined up for 2017, just as it should be.
Jo Boa (The Man Living in Our House) rocked the red carpet last at the MBC Awards, and she did it again at KBS, this time with a lovely blush dress with just enough embellishment to make it blingy and eye-catching. Most importantly, she’s glowing in every picture. It’s been a good year for Jo Boa, who made the most out of secondary roles, turning minor characters into memorable ones.
Park Shin-yang took home a Top Excellence Award for his heartwarming performance in Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, a character he made as offbeat and interesting as he was honorable and heroic. Heo Jung-eun sat between her two TV dads—Park Shin-yang and Oh Ji-ho—at the ceremony, and both of them cheered her on when she won the Youth Actress Award for no less than THREE dramas this year: Neighborhood Lawyer, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, and Oh My Geum-bi.
Another young actress, Jin Ji-hee, who’s growing up so fast! She had the short 4-episode drama Baek-hee Has Returned this past year, and looks lovely in her dress, which somehow makes me think of spring and snow at the same time.
Five Kids’ runaway stars Sung Hoon and Shin Hye-sun arrived together, arm-in-arm. Shin Hye-sun is cracking me up lately as the hapless second lead in Legend of the Blue Sea, and I can see why she became one of 2016’s breakout stars.
Up-and-comer Gong Seung-yeon also had a full year, from SBS’s Six Flying Dragons to KBS’s Master–God of Noodle, and she’s due to be in tvN’s Introverted Boss next. I love the whole look she has here, from her crown of braids to her silvery gown. The hair really makes it feel young and fresh, and her smile is infectious.
Han Go-eun (Miss Mama Mia) really knows how to strut. Her dress was made for movement, because in every shot while she’s walking, the train flutters around her perfectly. I don’t even think the dress is all that interesting, but she just wears the hell out of it.
Meh, this dress on Jo Yeo-jung (Babysitter). It’s just so sack-like. Maybe if it had been pants, I would’ve thought it mod and cool or something.
Laurel Tree Tailors was another of KBS’s big shows, and couples Ra Mi-ran and Cha In-pyo and Hyun-woo and Lee Se-young were almost in matching outfits. They all got Best Couple Awards, and Hyun-woo and Lee Se-young were especially cutesy together on the red carpet.
Lee Yuri, whaaaaat are you wearing? Why does your face look ghostly, and why did you get swallowed up by a pink monstrosity with capes for sleeves? I wish someone could explain this dress to me, but I think it defies explanation.
